How to Reduce Work Related Stress

Updated: Jul 3, 2022

In today’s fast-paced society, the workplace is a likely source of stress. One out of five workers is reportedly at risk for stress-related health problems. Learning how to handle job stress can benefit both your professional and personal life. Stress can have a big impact on how you interact with others. By learning to manage your stress, the more likely you will positively affect the people around you, and the better you will handle the stress of others.

Eat a Healthy Breakfast

Starting your day off with a healthy, well-balanced breakfast can help you get through stressful workdays. Low blood sugar makes your body feel anxious and irritable, while overeating can make you lethargic. A healthy breakfast helps jump-start your metabolism for the day, assisting in higher productivity.

Eliminate Unnecessary Distractions

Responding to unimportant personal phone calls, text messages, and e-mails takes precious time away from your workday. It can quickly result in getting you behind with your current workload. Social media is also a great distraction. Unless you need to use social media for your job, it is best not to use it during your work hours.

Complete the Most Dreaded Task First

Get in the habit of completing the most dreaded task first. This is a great way to prioritize and to reduce your daily anxiety levels at a faster rate.

Eat Healthy Snacks throughout the Day

It is important to eat frequent small snacks throughout the day. It helps your body establish even blood sugar levels, which boosts your energy, keeps you focused, and controls your moods. Foods containing vitamins B and C, and magnesium are great foods that help control stress levels.

Avoid Drinking too much Coffee, Alcohol, and Sugar

Drinking too much coffee, alcohol, and sugar tends to have a negative effect on the body. Excessive amounts tend to strip the body of essential nutrients and demolish the work of a healthy diet. By overindulging in these, your body increases the intake of stress building nutrients.

Take a Deep Breath

If you’re feeling overwhelmed from a stressful day at work and need to clear your mind, a few minutes of deep breathing can help restore your balance. By inhaling air for five seconds and slowly exhaling, your body can quickly start to calm down and refocus.

Get Quality Sleep

Make sure you get on a regular sleep schedule. A lack of sleep can deeply affect your body and emotions. Eating a healthy diet and avoiding excessive caffeine will help contribute to sleeping for longer periods at a time.

Exercise

Regular exercise is a great stress reliever. Even if it is the last thing, you feel like doing after a long day at work. Just 20 minutes of aerobic exercise a day raises your heart rate and releases toxins from your body. Exercise is a highly effective way to increase your energy, sharpen focus, and relax your mind and body.
